The Maniototo is a unique region of New Zealand. Its expansive plains are surrounded by beautiful snow-capped mountains and mirrored by one of the clearest blue skies you are ever likely to see.

Four-wheel driving offers you the opportunity to see much of this amazing landscape, within your day. Driver and guide John Mulholland has more than 10 years experience, operating 4WD Safaris alongside his own farming operation. He has the contacts to be able to take you to some special look outs, many miles from roads as you know them. There is also very little this local doesn't know about the Maniototo, its history and its people.

John offers two main tour options. Each is about six hours long but they are very different.

Goldfields / Heritage / Farm tour

The Goldfields heritage farm tour operates all year round. It starts at your base in Naseby, before heading up the road to the Kyeburn Diggings and the old Hamilton site, including its cemetery. Next is the Styx Gaol, then up through the Paerau Valley to the famous Serpentine Church. The trip then takes you through the spectacular rocky tors to "Rohan Country", for those of you familiar with the Lord of the Rings movie, before heading for home past modern-day farming operations.

The High Country tour

The High Country tour will leave you with a camera-full of memories as you travel over and beyond the vast Mount Ida range. On the way, you visit the old Mt Buster Goldfields, which was one of the most lucrative fields in Otago. The tour then follows the Tailings Creek with its many crossings, before looping back to traverse the open tussock tops of the "Two Syndicates" - an area known for its annual muster.

Package Rate

Two nights: $1010 for one person, $1200 for two people, $1590 for three people.

• A guided four-wheel drive expedition
